Database Replication

March 6, 2008

As of yesterday the entire Storago CMS database is set up so that all changes are immediately replicated onto a second server. Database replication provides us with a live backup in case of hardware failure, as well as the ability to do full backups at any time without taking down the primary server to do so. This is all good news, but doesn't really have any day-to-day affect on the sites we host. However, there are also two key benefits for all websites using the Storago system:

  • Off-Loading Searches - Normal web requests are still answered using the primary server, but for those sites using the Shopping Cart module we now redirect all product keyword searches and advanced searches to the secondary database server. Searches tie up a lot of resources in comparison to the ordinary queries the database receives, so this change should eliminate any impact on other site visitors when searches are being performed.

  • Database Fail-Over - If either one of the database servers is off-line for any reason (for maintenance or when there are too many connections, for example) the Storago CMS will automatically attempt to load the required data from the other database server. This leads to a higher percentage of uptime for your website.
