Animated GIF Files

In the early 90's, obnoxious animated GIF files were all the rage. While frowned upon and generally recommended against, there are a few specific uses where animated GIF's still come in handy.

These blinking "LED" status indicators are available in five colors as single pixel transparent animated gifs so they can be resized. Please use these sparingly and in good taste. Tip: If you size your indicator using the em unit they will be allowed to scale with your browser text size. I've used 0.7em for the example images here:

Red — Green — Blue — Yellow — Black

You can combine one of the blinkers with a specific background color and border to create a more subtle effect:

Red on Dark Red with Black Border — Blue and Red (Police Light!)

Vague progress bars. These are useful when a progress will take some indeterminate amount of time. It is also possible to use Javascript to switch between any of these graphics to perform more accurate status notification.
